◉ Why Bintang

What you gain from studying with us

There are several ways to learn about personal finance. This page explains why we believe the Bintang approach — small groups, experienced instruction, no product sales — serves the adult learner better than most alternatives.

The case for studying with Bintang

Practitioner-led instruction

The person teaching CPF structures to your group is a CFA charterholder who spent twenty-two years doing precisely this work in private banking. Not a trainer reading from a slide deck — someone who knows the subject from the inside.

Groups of ten, never more

The maximum group size for evening programmes is ten. This is a deliberate constraint that preserves the quality of conversation and ensures every participant can ask what they actually need to ask.

No conflict of interest

We do not sell financial products, take referral fees, or recommend specific providers. The curriculum is entirely educational. What you learn here serves your understanding, not our revenue.

Singapore-specific curriculum

Every programme is built around Singapore's actual financial instruments — CPF, SRS, SSBs, MAS-regulated platforms, IRAS tax treatment. The content is not adapted from foreign material and applied loosely to local conditions.

Printed readers to keep

Participants receive a printed reader before each session. These are designed to be annotated, shared at home, and referred to later — not discarded after the evening ends.

Evenings and weekends

All programmes are scheduled outside office hours. Attending should not require taking leave or disrupting a professional diary. Tuesday evenings for group programmes; bespoke sessions by arrangement.

The expertise benefit

Financial education is only as good as the knowledge behind it. Raymond Heng, our founder and lead instructor, accumulated two decades of direct experience working with private banking clients across Singapore, Hong Kong, and the wider region. He was not an academic studying wealth management — he was a practitioner managing it.

That background shapes everything about how our programmes are structured. The examples are drawn from real household situations. The questions participants raise during sessions are ones he has heard, and dealt with, many times before.

What this means in practice

  • CFA charterholder leading core sessions
  • 22+ years in regional private banking
  • Guest instructors with specialist depth (IRAS, estate planning)
  • Content reviewed before each intake for policy changes

The curriculum benefit

Most adult financial education in Singapore covers broad concepts that apply everywhere — compound interest, diversification, budget ratios. These are not without value, but they leave the Singapore-specific questions unanswered.

Our programmes start from where you actually live: CPF, SRS, SSBs, RSTU, the distinction between full retirement sum and basic retirement sum, what happens to your CPF at 55 and again at 65, how SRS contributions interact with your income tax assessment, and which local platforms offer access to unit trusts and index funds with low fee structures.

Topics our courses address

  • CPF structures: OA, SA, MA, RA accounts and their interactions
  • SRS: contribution strategy and tax implications
  • Singapore Savings Bonds and fixed-income alternatives
  • Household insurance review for the mid-life stage
  • Legacy and giving considerations under Singapore law

The service benefit

We keep our programmes small because we believe a good learning experience requires genuine attention. When you write to us with a question before a session, you receive a direct reply — not an automated response. When you raise something in the group that warrants a longer answer, we find the time for it.

For bespoke Lantern Track clients, this attentiveness extends to the preparation of custom written materials between sessions, drawn directly from what emerged in the previous meeting.

What attentive service looks like

  • Direct replies to pre-session questions within one working day
  • Private online forum for follow-up questions between sessions
  • Bespoke written materials for Lantern Track participants
  • Programme coordinator available by phone during office hours

The value benefit

Our programmes are priced to reflect the quality of instruction, the preparation involved, and the small group setting — not to maximise volume. The six-week evening group runs at SGD 250 per participant. The eight-week wealth literacy course at SGD 400. The six-session bespoke Lantern Track at SGD 720.

All pricing is stated clearly before enrolment. There are no supplementary charges for printed materials, forum access, or follow-up correspondence during the programme period.

What is included in every programme

  • Printed reader prepared and delivered before each session
  • Access to private participant forum for the programme duration
  • Follow-up correspondence with the instructor
  • No hidden fees or upselling within the programme

◉ What Sets Us Apart

Distinctive features of the Bintang model

The printed reader model

No other financial education provider in Singapore prepares a dedicated printed reader for each session. Ours are written specifically for the programme, not sourced from generic materials. Participants frequently describe them as the most useful part of the experience.

The household conversation

The Lantern Track is specifically designed to include a spouse, partner, or adult child — because financial decisions in mid-life are rarely made by one person. Few educational offerings are structured to accommodate this naturally.

The between-session forum

Understanding often comes a day or two after a session, when a participant has had time to reflect. Our private forum is open between sessions precisely for this — for the question that arrives on Wednesday morning, not during Tuesday evening.

Content kept current

CPF policy changes. IRAS guidance updates. MAS regulations evolve. Our content is reviewed before each intake and updated to reflect the Singapore that participants will actually face — not the Singapore of two years ago.
