I attended the six-week evening group after my husband encouraged me to. I had always left financial decisions to him, and I realised at 47 that this was not a good position to be in. The printed reader before each session was useful — I could read it on the train and come to the evening with questions already formed. The group was small enough that I was not embarrassed to ask something basic.

The Wealth Literacy Course covered the SRS in more detail than I expected. I had opened an SRS account years ago on a colleague's advice and never really understood what I had done or why. By the third session I had a clear picture of how it works and what I should probably do over the next five years before I retire. The instructor was patient and did not talk down to us.

I chose the Lantern Track because my situation — my husband passed away two years ago and I was suddenly responsible for everything — did not fit neatly into a general course. Raymond took a long time in the first session simply listening and asking questions. By the end I felt that the remaining sessions would actually address what I needed to understand, not a standard syllabus.

I have attended two separate programmes now — the six-week group last year and the eight-week course in January. Each covered different ground. I would say the eight-week course is more demanding in a good way — the SRS and CPF material requires you to sit with it for a few days before it settles. The between-session forum was useful for that.

The evening on insurance and protection was the one I found most immediately useful. I had been paying premiums for years without fully understanding what I was covered for. The session prompted me to actually read my policies — properly, for the first time. The printed reader helped there too; I could annotate it as I went through my own documents.

My wife and I attended the Lantern Track together, which was the main reason we chose it over the group programmes. We had different levels of knowledge and different concerns — her background is in healthcare and mine is technical, and neither of us had a clear picture of how our combined finances actually worked. The sessions addressed both of us without feeling like one of us was slowing things down.

◉ Participant Journeys

Three accounts in more detail

The following accounts are drawn from follow-up correspondence with participants, shared with their agreement.

The situation

A 52-year-old procurement manager with a working spouse and two children at university. They had accumulated CPF savings over 25 years but had never deliberately reviewed them. Retirement was visible on the horizon and both felt they were unprepared to think about it clearly.

The programme

Both attended the Singapore Wealth Literacy Course in separate intakes (she first, then he joined the following intake three months later). They described the shared vocabulary this gave them — being able to discuss CPF Life options, SRS drawdown timing, and their respective OA balances in specific rather than vague terms — as the most practically useful outcome.

What changed

They met with a licensed financial adviser after completing the course. The adviser noted that they arrived with a much clearer set of questions than most clients of their age. They subsequently made three concrete changes to their SRS strategy and reviewed their insurance coverage as a couple for the first time.

"The course did not tell us what to do. It gave us the language to figure it out ourselves."

The situation

A 58-year-old woman who had recently inherited a modest property portfolio from her mother. She had limited experience managing investments and was not sure how to think about the inheritance in the context of her approaching retirement — or how to have the conversation with her own adult children.

The programme

She chose the Lantern Track and, from the second session onward, brought her adult daughter to join. The sessions covered inheritance considerations under Singapore law, how property fits into a retirement income picture, and how to structure a family conversation about the longer-term plan.

What changed

She reported feeling less anxious about the inherited assets after the programme. She and her daughter had a clear shared understanding of what they held and what questions to take to a lawyer and a licensed adviser. The final summary document from the Lantern Track became a working reference for those conversations.

"I was nervous before the first session. Raymond made it feel like a conversation, not a lecture. By the end I could explain things to my daughter clearly."

The situation

A 44-year-old man in a senior role in logistics, originally from Malaysia, with family ties and some savings in both countries. He was aware that his situation — Singaporean PR, Malaysian assets, Singapore CPF — was not straightforward, and he had found it difficult to get a clear picture from any single source.

The programme

He attended the six-week group first to build a general understanding, then enrolled in the eight-week Wealth Literacy Course. The cross-border sessions in the course — covering foreign-currency exposure and the implications of holding assets across jurisdictions — were directly relevant to his situation.

What changed

He described the two courses together as giving him a framework he had been trying to assemble for years from articles and advisers who each only addressed part of his situation. He subsequently sought separate specialist advice on the cross-border aspects, armed with specific questions.

"Nobody had ever put the whole picture together for me before. This was the first time I felt I understood what I was dealing with."
